About the Area

Tortosa is situated on the River Ebro and is the capital of the Southern area of Cataluña. This city provides interesting A view of the nearby mountinas and natural parkhistorical sites, popular festivals and fairs and good accommodation.

The river is one of Spain's most celebrated waterways. It enters southern Cataluña from Aragon and is a fisherman's paradise with Red Mullet, Perch, Carp and the famous Catfish in abundance. Many fishermen come here to try their hand at landing some of the 100lb plus or so Catfish.

Another view of the stunning mountains and view from the villaFollowing the river inland we come to Xerta. Here is the famous Dam l'Assut, a piece of hydraulic engineering first started in the Islamic period, collecting water for the two irrigation channels which provide water for the much sought after Oranges and Olive Oil grown in the area. From Tortosa it is only 30 minutes across the Ebro Valley Delta to the Mediterranean Sea where the superb sandy beach stretches for 80km. Here the Ebro River is at its widest and the marshy Delta provides a haven for wildlife. It is also an important rice-growing region.

On the Delta Coast are several towns with yacht clubs and water sports and some excellent fish restaurants, but it is a far cry from the crowded and popular 'Costa's'. Peaceful and beautiful, yet not too remote, the Ebro Valley and the Ebro Valley Delta are certainly the places to visit!
